Response Interruption & Redirection (RIR) is the introduction of a prompt, comment, or other distractors when an interfering behavior is occurring that is designed to divert the learners attention away from the interfering behavior and results in its reduction.

When first beginning to use response interruption/redirection, it is important to use continuous reinforcement by providing the learner on the spectrum the identified reinforcer(s) each time the learner uses the alternative behavior.
